The sad saga of Vlad the Volvo is not yet over, alas, alack.
Turns out the stuck-in-reverse problem was "just" some busted bearings, which only came to $170.
But the mechanic's eagle-eye spotted that the water pump was toast. $310.
Then the brake inspection came in with two seized calipers. At least $250 per.
The inspection isn't finished.
I wish that Vlad had gone out in some truly melodramatic fashion that would be a single, back-breaking failure. The drama, the strife, the agony, the sorrow, that would have all just been that much more amusing. The image of taking the tired old horse out in back and shooting it to end its misery was a choice image. (Me, dark sense of humor? No...)
Alas, no, the repairs are just going to inexorably pile up and paper-cut my savings to shreds. *sigh* So, I'm waiting from a call back from the shop to determine how much they'll offer me in cash, or in service credit. At least I have the comfort of knowing that my old beast will be well cared for into his old age (well, okay, older age, he is 16 years old) as a service loaner for the shop.
Those of you out there who have hybrids, what are the service calls like? I know that Toyota and Honda make resilient and durable cars, but the hybrid technology isn't terribly old, so I am interested to hear what you have to say about the hybrid's repair histories so far.
