willowrootGlowbug: Saw the first of the season last night. Made me quite happy. Of course, it didn't come out until sometime around 11, but it was still plenty nice to see it.
Almost makes up for the dearth of frogs this year, though I heard a few piping up last night, as well. The dearth is likely due to the higher number of green herons flocking to the area. Either that or we've got a warren of carnivorous vorpal bunnies hidden amongst the rest of the lagomorphs this year.
What is it about fireflies that makes me feel like a 7-year old running around going *glee*! whenever I see one? Of course, I didn't grow up in an area that had them, so that might be some part of it. A friend of mine once told me about a time he had in Puerto Rico where he saw entire trees coated in fireflies, and they would slowly synchronize:
*bliblinkblblinblinblinkblink blink BLINK BLINK*
Watching half-inch insects light up with that faintly green phosphorescence, hovering silently, or else moving up and down, doing their insectile mating-dance.
Epiphany: Notice that I haven't told you anything about the year-long struggle at work which finally came together this morning (oh, yeah: my fusion construct is expressing, time to get on with the real work).
I'd much rather tell you about the wild stuff around the house, even if I was outside at the time of night for odd reasons. I think my time in the molecular biology field is coming to an end, 10 years has been enough.
It is time to look at the living world around me, rather than at the world living inside us all.
