Wow. Talk about serendipity, in so many strange ways. And my brain's still kind of scrambled by it, so here goes.
Last Friday, when my independent-study high school student and I met (more on that later), her mom mentioned to me that the student had a show on Sunday, at the Olde Town. No explanation, just a mention, and a wouldn't-it-be-nice-if...
What the heck, I didn't have anything else seriously planned for last night (berries aside).
:Uses for Wood" is right in the middle of the Americana-blues-country-roots rock matrix that seems to define Ann Arbor groups. They have a hell of a lot of fun with it, that's for certain. (One way to tell it's an A2 group: over half the band is wearing sandals.)
For 2 and a half hours, the five-piece kicked serious ass (fiddle/mandolin/guitar, guitar, dobro (my student), electric bass, drum), doing everything from Muddy Waters to Los Lobos to Hank Williams to the Eagles.
My student was the youngest in the band, by, oh, 8 years at least, and probably 15 years under the average age. But they kept letting her solo, and, damn, she was good (though she could have a looser stage presence *laugh*). Apparently she's found her instrument (according to her folks, who I sat and chatted with).
So, I had a great time. Plus, I seem to have made a friend, even a family of friends. And I got a ridiculous kick out of saying "Yeah, I'm her bio teacher." when introduced to some of the band's hangers-on. Last, her mom's promised to get me one of the band's CDs... without even my asking.
Sometimes, this town really does kick ass.
