The call of a solitary redwing blackbird, staking his claim before the competition has even shown up.

A robin calling at sunset, as if he'd flown wrong way 'round the world.

The black humor of transient turkey vultures doing lazy thermal circles over the hospital.

Brilliant sunsets, at a time when you can be comfortably outside to enjoy them.

A few, bold, trees starting their buds, uncertain after the long cold.

The grass showing an inclination to start thinking about turning green, now the heaviest snow is gone.

The smell of rain, instead of the sound of snow.
