My mental calculations for the past few weeks proved to be just about right, in regards to my converting the benchwork into publications and planning for my doctoral defense. What makes me say this?
Just got out of a chat with my boss, where she opened up with "So, let's talk about getting you out of here."
I've been looking at wrapping up my benchwork starting in March or thereabouts, and getting three publications of my own, out the door, by the end of August. Throw in a research 'note' I should be whipping out in the next three months, and a co-first-authorship on a collaboration in the next four months, and I'll have "five" chapters to my dissertation. Then, presuming the Gods of Science Publications don't frown too much upon me, I could be defending as early as next December.
Of course, getting a teaching job right out of the gates, that might take a while... but if I'm spending 90% of my time this spring and summer writing, I can sneak some teaching side-jobs in at local tech and comm colleges, and start padding out that teaching CV. I'm pretty certain that'll be a crucial element to landing a solid teaching job.
I'm gonna make it to the damn degree, this time.
Hell, I'm even likely to make it in time that my dad will be able to remember it for a few years, still (whether my folks make it out in person, or get to watch the recording, that'll depend entirely on their health issues. *sigh*)
