Feb. 16th, 2007

Just found out that my poster abstract was accepted for the American Society of Microbiology's 107th General Meeting in May in Toronto.

Now, if I'd nagged the boss, I would've had a chance to get a student travel grant, but, no, that one kinda slipped through the cracks.

Hrmm, I suppose I should now actually *register* for the meeting.
I'm taking this class. It's a class on, strangely enough, how to teach science.

It includes sessions on how to give a good presentation. Ostensibly so that we're good at talking in front of audience, I presume. Not like I know how to do that or anything. To demonstrate that we got it all, we were to give a fluff presentation--10 minutes on a topic we enjoy personally.

I talked about making jam. Following guidelines, I pitched it to my audience of grad students about the benefits and joys of making jam ("There's this thing called the Sun. It's apparently good for us as humans to leave the lab and get Outside to see this Sun on occasion...."), and it was well received. But, I was informed in no uncertain terms by my audience that I needed to bring samples in for the next class.

So, I did. Blueberry-lemon, peach-ginger, and strawberry. Well received--which is about what I expect. It's home-made jam, for cryin' out loud. Who doesn't like it? I take what's left back to the lab and lay it out with the crackers.

I mention it in passing to my boss, and she immediately jumps up to get some. Yes, she's had it before.

Edit: Note to self--next time, less lemon. The jam ages differently and is very lemony now.
