Okay, yes, I know this drill, I've been through these hoops, and I know what it takes to get the class done and out of the way. Especially when the prof's grading on class participation.
But... but the teacher just looks so sad when he asks a question and no one pipes up to answer. So I raise my hand just to make the (first-time teacher/non-native-English speaker) prof happy.
Yup, unh-hunh, it's entirely altruistic on my part.
Of course, by the end of this class the teacher(s) will have an image of my raised hand seared into the back of their retinas. Plus I'll have many bullseyes etched into the back of my head by the caustic glares of my classmates. I'm certain.
