Work for the past two weeks has me buzzing like a live wire. 'Busy' doesn't quite cut it.
Two weeks ago, we picked up an undergrad for the summer. She's not done any bio research before. Also, her project for the summer has changed at least twice since she started.
Last week, we got two veterinary students doing summer lab research rotations. Both of them have basic classroom lab experience, but not any real research experience.
Last Friday, the lab expanded from our room to get the room next door. So our 10' x 20' rectangle (for six people!) is now adjacent to a 15' x 30' room with far more bench space.
Yesterday, we acquired a third summer vet student (although doing a clinical research rotation). She has rather extensive lab experience, but she's here for clinical vet work, primarily.
Although the boss has officially handled safety training (a 5 minute talk, in her case), I'm making sure that the four students all know what's what, and where to find things, what to/not to do, where to get rid of things, and so on. Plus I'm chasing down contacts and paperwork for things like keys and card access.
I orchestrated the expansion, including cleaning and decommissioning the new space, manifesting the left-behind chemicals for waste disposal, supplying both labs with enough crap (err, disposable supplies like gloves and pipet tips) to allow for work without running back and forth between the rooms. I'm also handling the contractor inspection, quote and work-plans for knocking a hole through the connecting wall.
I'm riding shotgun on the three students whose projects don't require much intervention or attention from the boss. The other one that I'm not overseeing just thinks that I know everything and asks me anyway.
As I told my coworker early last week: don't expect to get anything done this week. It just turns out that for me, that's going to mean this week, too.
Oh well. Can't say that I don't got nothing to do...
