So, one bright bulb in the department got the idea to put together a departmental softball team for the spring/summer term. Ostensibly, given the responses he got, we'd all be playing in the bottom-tier league--playing for fun, without being terribly serious.

There's an initial sign-up fee for the whole team. Ok, fine. I believe the dept. chair said that would be an okay use of funds laying about. Should pay for the amateur umpires, and field access.

Every player has to have a UM ID#. Sure, makes sense, this is the UM Intramural League after all.

All non-students have to cough up $40 for a 'facilities access fee' for the season. Excuse me? Oh, any staff who aren't already members of the campus-wide sports system have to cough up the $40? So my choices are either paying $18-24 a month for the gyms, or $40, just so I can play in the duffer's league?

The hell with that.

So, the Ligers, or the Fighting Pinworms (don't think we ever chose a final name) died a quick, ignominous death, as quickly as they'd come together.

Bugger the University.
