Well, having now survived the First Day of Teaching, the only thing I really can say about it is that the Second Day shall be Better.
As I'd mentioned here I am teaching a class at Community High School here in A2. Biological Sciences in the News is the title, and it's my first time in a high school in... holy mackerel 18 years. It's my first time teaching anything since grad school, and that's 7 years ago. Yes, I was a bit of a spaz, as I'd predicted, but I think I'll be okay with the kids. After all, there are only three of them.
However, finding out at the last minute that I didn't have a classroom, and would have to teach in the library, was discombobulating, but I managed. That WILL change, as it's already been discussed with the program coordinator.
Being verbally assaulted by the head librarian about talking too loudly in the library, however, was much more unpleasant. If she were thrown to the lions, I'd bet on her, for a total kill by the second round. I'm sorry, I wasn't given a choice, this is the ONE room I can teach in right now, and yes, I'm sorry, but I'm not in the stacks, I'm in the open computer lab section, and if you'd gently asked me to be quiet, I would try very hard, I don't deal well with being given orders at tooth-point. I'm not a goddam rambunctious student who needs to be put down. Fierce, fierce lady who needs to chill out.
*glurgle*
And next time, I should even have a thing like a vocab list and something resembling a syllabus. Today was taught on very little preparation, as I'd forgotten entirely about doing the class due to the entire job-search issue. I was abruptly reminded last Wednesday that I'd be teaching on this Tuesday morning. I do hope I didn't scare the kids off too badly by being a rambly bugger, but I do promise to do better.
So... now I'm just getting around to looking forward to Thursday morning's class.
