I'm going to be a high school teacher come the fall.
Well, alright, technically I'll be volunteering to teach one elective class for one term, for either 3 or 6 hours a week (still figuring that out), and it's at the 'alternative' high school here in A2. However, as defined by Arborites, this 'alternative' means the school that all the cool/weird/funky students go to, because the usual school structure won't fit their needs, as opposed to the usual 'alternative' we all know (there's one of those high schools in A2, as well).
The class, which is yet in need of a name, shall be taught around bio topics ripped from the headlines (things like GM food, gene disorders, stem cells, and so forth), and hopefully this will keep the kids (*ahem* Students. I have to get out of that habit.) interested in the material--it's stuff that's immediately applicable to them, that they'll hear about every day. For the rest of their lives, pretty much, this being heralded as the Century of Biology.
Of course, I do have a subversive agenda (this should come as no surprise). Something along the lines of "An informed citizen is a good citizen." Science is hardly something to be afraid of, and it's not hard to have an intelligent opinion about the latest breakthroughs. It shall be interesting to see how much success I'll have in that regard. But I've all summer to develop the curriculum, and a good friend has volunteered some time to help with that (it's what her MS is in...) so I'm in good hands...
Until the first day of class. Then I'm likely to be a bit of a spaz. Heh.
