To start this travelogue:
The first leg of my trip was to visit San Francisco, to see my friends C and Fizz. They were gracious enough to let me crash with them and monopolize their kitties while I was there (or was it that the kitties monopolized me?). Officially, the reason I went was to attend DunDraCon, which is the Bay Area's big gaming con. However, Fizz took the opportunity to shang-hai me into doing some touristy things he'd always wanted to do, but had not sufficient excuses to go. So, we started with the USS Hornet Museum. As for DunDraCon, I had attended last year, when Fizz and I ran a game, for 8 strangers, for 8 hours. It was quite the experience, and it went quite well. This year, I went so that Fizz and I could play some games. Although we tried our darnedest to get into some serious games, that didn't happen. Instead, we played:
Call of Cthulhu, as set in the Clue movie. Fizz and I played, together, Yvette the Maid. It was a hoot. Our friend Jen played Miss Scarlett, and did smashingly well, I might add.
Dungeons and Dragons, 3e, as set in Discworld. I played a Klatchian member of the Night Watch, with a living suit of Rhino Hide armor (it occasionally munched the grass), Fizz was a Gnome Ratcatcher, who had this thing against Bovines (and by near-sighted extension, rhinoceri... you can see where this is going, can't you?). Another exceedingly fun game.
A big pile of Settlers of Cataan, whereupon I actually met another Brian Gray, and found out that I'd ganked his con entry badge. Oops. I cleared that up by finding out that the Con had somehow totally lost my entry information, yet still cashed my check...*sigh*
A LARP based on the world of Tekumel. Compared to most LARP's I've played in, this one was exceedingly well plotted, in that everyone had something interesting to do, and yet could still make their own path, if they so chose. I was very impressed.
I also got to meet a number of cool people out there, so I'll say 'Hi' in passing to Carrie, Sophie, and Jen.
For pictures, please look here. Most of you know that pictures of people playing RPG's tend not to be terribly exciting, which is why there's a lot of photos of the Hornet...
