And the emergency patch instituted last night apparently forgot to account for a re-auto-update feature in McAfee or something similar.

The MCIT systems are back to square one. At least I managed to safe-boot one of the machines and disable the auto-update function yesterday...

It's been interesting catching commentary from some of my friends and acquaintances scattered throughout IT here on campus. This appears to be a med-center-specific beastie, because of the effort to run a corporate-style unified IT policy with pushed updates and so on. That the research labs are also affected is incidental to the mess that the main med center techs are dealing with.

That's not a bad idea, if you test the patches before you push them out to everyone.

McAfee should be testing the patches before they release them into the wild.

Doesn't mean the local admins shouldn't also test before distributing, but the primary failure here is on the software provider. Flinx's med center is only one of many, many organizations dealing with this blunder.

Whilst conversing with our local IT guy, he mentioned that the word came down from on high: "Don't call in sick on Thursday unless you're already dead."
