Science! post #1

In deference to those of you who have not yet responded with wild acclaim to my offer of summary posts detailing my graduate work, I shall do you the magnanimous favor of placing my reasoned and learned discourse behind a cut. Also, this way [livejournal.com profile] taldarhan can maintain his clever facade of placid oafishness whilst perusing the web at truckstops.

[livejournal.com profile] sfeldon... I promise I'll try reducing some of this to haiku form. It'll certainly be easier than writing in sonnet verse.

In short, I work on the body's immune response to infection by Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium that is the root cause of 95% of all stomach and duodenal ulcers in humans, and the only living organism classified as a carcinogen. I'll take you through my graduate world in stages.

One last warning: I can be a snarky wit, at times. Don't take offense at a 'folksy' tone or a simplified example (there'll be a lot of those). I'm pitching this fairly broadly.

Herewith, the basic microbiology of Helicobacter pylori. )
